Interview: Chris Pidsley

London based indie-pop singer Chris Pidsley is back with his new single Cinnamon. Since starting out a few years back Chris has released many songs, gained airplay from his local BBC Introducing show and played some great shows. Check out what was said when we caught up with Chris to find out about all of that, plus more:

Introduce yourself and your music to our audience.

My name is Chris Pidsley, I’m originally from Gloucestershire but have since moved to London. I’d best describe my music as Indie pop with mainly acoustic based melodies and tongue-in-cheek, relatable lyrics. Basically I just make music that I’d want to listen to.

What's the best show you've ever played?

The best show I’ve played was at The Spice of Life in Soho. It's an intimate venue located in the basement of a pub and always has a great vibe, plus the crowd is always great! In terms of the biggest crowd, it was probably when I played at The Camden Assembly. I was playing the same bill as Jason Allan who seemed to have quite a hardcore following! So I received a bit of that secondhand crowd buzz!

Now for a non-music related question. What's your go to meal deal?

Gotta be Tesco first of all. I usually have the same 3 items: Southern Fried Chicken wrap, Diet Coke and a packet of plain Hula hoops. Bit basic I know!

Your latest release is the single 'Cinnamon' with B-side 'Berryhead', tell us a bit more about these tracks.

I released the songs Cinnamon and Berryhead on 26th June. Cinnamon is a jazzy upbeat bop about the feeling of kissing someone for the first time. Berryhead I wrote whilst on holiday in Torquay at a place called Berryhead. On a walk I came across a bench that was dedicated to a couple because it was “their favourite spot in the world” this inspired me to write a song about a love story that wasn’t mine. And how I imagined their story had gone and how that love must have felt. (Deep I know)

What would be your dream show?

I would love to play an intimate venue in London like Shepards Bush or The Roundhouse. I’d love to play with a few other musicians behind me but keeping an overall intimate vibe and have everybody singing my songs back to me I mean that’s the dream isn’t it! I’d also love to support some of my favourite acts like Cavetown or Rex Orange County just to experience their touring technique and learn from them as well as experiencing the buzz they get from the crowd.

We’re all about supporting new music here at Unison M&E so could you give us a couple of recommendations for some new artists doing great stuff?

New artists that I think deserve more recognition include:

Is there anything new in the pipeline for yourself?

I haven’t had many gigs recently due to everything COVID related except for a few live-streams. I’m currently in the process of writing and recording my debut EP. I’ve got 5 songs in the works for this which I think is my best work yet!

Another lighthearted one to end on, could you give us your favourite band from each decade, all the way from the 60's to the 00's.

This is a tricky question and I’m afraid I’m going to have to go quite basic on some of these answers!

60s - Gotta be The Beatles

70s - Led Zeppelin

80s - Guns N Roses

90s - Oasis

00s - Arctic Monkeys

10s - The 1975, Bon Iver or Cavetown

You can listen to Chris' latest release 'Cinnamon' along with B-side 'Berryhead' right here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/chrispidsley/cinnamon. Cinnamon is a upbeat, guitar lead, indie-pop track that eoncompasses catchy hooks and groovy bass lines. The bass and drums played by producer Ross Western, are exquisite, locked in together and allow for the Pidsley's vocal melody and guitar lines to flourish. A definite recommended listen and a confirmed playlist addition for me.
